AndreaS74
Hi My great uncle, Frank Osborne died aged 22 when a German U-Boat torpedoed HMS Barham on 25th November 1941. As it is 80 years this year, I was wondering if there was a way of finding out how many of the men were from Sheffield....? Any info/advice is much appreciated. Rollypolly
There's an HMS Barham Facebook group. That might be somewhere to start
Jim Hardie
Can’t answer your question but there are a few items on YouTube. It was the only British battleship to be sunk at sea by a u boat in WW2.

I've contacted them but no response. They also have a website with a full crew list but its doesn't say where each of the men came from. I would like to find out as I would like to arrange some sort of memorial regardless of how small but time is of the essence. 2 hours ago, Jim Hardie said: Can’t answer your question but there are a few items on YouTube. Rollypolly
Have you tried the National Archives? Also years ago I was trying to find details of someone who died on board during WW2. I eventually found the information on a forces memorial website. Unfortunately I can't remember what it was called but I think it might be based at Bournemouth or Plymouth. AndreaS74
Thanks. I will try the national archives. It’s a list of all the men from Sheffield I am hoping to find but not sure if such a thing exists. Thanks again
Rollypolly
I've remembered the site I used. It was commonwealth war graves. It lists Frank Osbourne, service no. D/JX176692 Died 25 Nov 1941 age 22. Commemorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Panel 48 column 1. Hope this helps in your search.

I have all Frank's info, I'm trying to establish other men from Sheffield. I can't find a database that lists the places where the men came from. lobster
Have you tried the newspaper archives for that period . Bear in mind the Admiralty did not confirm the sinking till the end of January 1942 Edited March 30, 2021 by lobster
lobster
go to the war graves https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/ Just put in the exact date of death and served in the Navy . Lists all the people that died on HMS Barham so you will have to go through them to find any Sheffield detail
