Spital Hill Store 1967

Can anyone recall the name of a wholesale store just on the left at the bottom of Spital hill. I think it began with a D

I've been told that the name was Dewires & that they sold an assortment of goods such furniture, crockery, watches & clothing amongst other things.

There was a similar wholesalers on the Wicker called Davisons.

I think Dewires were wholesale only, as in not selling directly to the public

I the late 1950's when I was only 7 or 8 I used to go in with my mum and one of the things I'll always remember of the the place was the tanoy. The sound of a womans voice saying something like "will Mr so and so go to such such department"

We had a newsagent/ sub post office  starting in 1966. 
We used to have a Dewires rep call on us and placed an order every month. 
Sometimes we called at the warehouse on Spital Hill which was typical of the old ramshackle places that had been adapted for the purpose from whatever their previous use was. 
We would often link this with a  visit to Bradburys on Stanley St  who wholesaled toys and greeting cards in similar but smaller premises.

Always a cuppa and a friendly welcome from brothers Norman, Alan and  staff.

A family business that genuinely made you feel part of the family .

Do they exist anymore ?

I now when an apprentice you couldn’t get in the Chipy on Spital

Hill they would take over the Chipy and the one on Thistle Street
