And they closed down Abbeydale Grange school? Then sold the land off for development? Shortly before they realised they needed to build more schools because the increasing birth rate would mean an increase in the number of school places required? Is that the sort of ploy that you are alluding to?

Stop banging on like it's some area of historic and national importance which must be preserved at all costs. God almighty your historic pre castle trading area was destroyed when they built the castle on top of it in the 1000s. Its been raided, conquered, battled over, flattened and redeveloped multiple times since. Even your beloved Castle Market was a redevelopment of a development. It's over. It's done. That historic trading you are so precious about has evolved. Perhaps Amazon should build a warehouse on there. That's still trading right? That would make you happy right? HeHasRisen
I for one won't be happy until the area is returned to how it was in the year 1021 and people were able to trade goats, grain and turnips by the riverbank.

lawro
I live in the area and am surprised how well the footfall has held up after the closure of the market. Much of it is due to the Post Office and Wilkos. I am optimistic about the future. Fitzalan Square is a massive improvement and the grey to green is fabulous. There should be a pressing need to improve the castle markets site and the idea of a park is welcoming. This is a gateway to the city centre with the cluster of hotels down there. The Five Weirs and canal basin are also worth investing in.
