The US got angry, acted out of anger without thinking things through, actually helped various fundamentalist terrorist groups to recruit, 20 years later pulled out having gotten bored. None of the aggressive actions the US took made the World a safer place. They went to Afghanistan because Afghanistan had hosted terrorist training camps but the specific 'terrorist training camps' that launched the September 11th attacks were located in the US and went by the name of 'flight schools'.
