They were not all young free single men. Many of them had families at home which they had to continue to provide for whilst they were doing such work. It is not an ideal job for those with families but then it is not an ideal world. Breeding a child comes with responsibilities and there are plenty of other types workers whose job involves significant time away from their families. There are plenty of other workers who sometimes have to pay contribute to the burden of travel, accommodation and sustenance alongside keeping their primary home running. Oil rig workers, laborers, trades, building contractors, military workers, hauliers, installers, engineers, technicians, actors, performers..... just a few roles who have to spend several weeks or months of the year away from their homes. Presumably all of the above are paid enough to maintain a family at home. Is a fruit picker? When employing immigrants, their family at home in eastern europe will have far lower living costs than an english family. So it works for them. You might argue lets pay them more then - but then prices will go up so much, that the british public will just buy cheaper imported fruit. So not an option. Mr Bloke
Hmmm... I'm surprised (well, not really! ) that no-one on here has questioned why we are still picking fruit and vegetables by hand. A quick look on YouTube shows there are lots of harvesting machines that are available for automating the process. Perhaps now is a good time for all those well-off farmers to invest some of the money they have been saving by paying for 'slave labour', in a bit more technology? Some fruits simply cant be picked by machine, yes some can but not all. No doubt they will have tested it but the machines will no damage loads of certain fruits for it not to be viable. A few years ago Countryfile did a show about robotic fruit picking. They said that most things can be picked by these machines. Someone posted the information on the forum about it. The only thing the robots had difficulty with picking was cauliflowers. That’s a few years ago so they could have a robot now to pick the pesky cauliflowers.
