Beamish
You can't stay stuck in the past. The area was a hustle and bustle in its heyday but the industrial landscape of the city has changed and things have to evolve and move on. Until recent years the area was run down, derelict and abandoned. Anything that gets people down that area and making use of the old buildings rather than demolish them is a good thing IMHO. Kidorry
The old Woodhead Components building was used as a mortuary during the great Sheffield flood. The boilerman who worked there in the basement was drowned. We had a man who swore blind that his ghost wandered around the old part of the building. Is it that we've now lost the industry that used to be there? Or is it the plastic pubs? Lots of money made building yuppie rabbit hutches for bright young things and pretentious pubs with **** poor beer and changing the area name because Kelham sound better than Shalesmoor,Really? Bridgehouses,Corporation st.Westbar,Shalesmoor were all in the same area Kelham was hardly ever spoke of until the Museum moved into the old tram generator building. Kelham Island
Beamish - we have received a photograph at Kelham Island Museum addressed to 'Beamish' Kel Island Museum, with no note or letter as to who has sent it and why. The photo is of an old Victorian? couple and simply says on the back Joan Slaters ( Sturgeon Grandparents. It is wrapped in an A4 sheet of paper with 'lost property' written on it. Does any of this ring a bell with you? We would like to get this back to its rightful owner. If anyone knows anything about this photo, who these people are and why you think Kelham Island Museum would be interested in them, please let me know. Sheffield Museums are unable to accept donations in this way without prior agreement, information to satisfy our collecting policy - primarily a connection to Sheffield (and in the case of Kelham - specifically industrial), an agreement at an acquisitions meeting and completion of an object deposit form by the donor. It would be helpful if the sender could get in touch. Thank you
Dr Seuss
I can't help but think that the Kelham Island name and branding is just being used as an estate agent marketing tool to try and increase the value of property outside the Kelham area and ditto by new residents in the area. The actual Kelham island is a relatively small area and in no way covers the much larger area that some people try to claim as Kelham. Given that places mean a lot to people (as well as their history) I'd much rather stick with what the locations were (and still are) originally called. What is up with Neepsend or Parkwood Springs or Shalesmoor or Bridgehouses or West Bar. Why is Kelham Flea located in Neepsend, Why is Kelham Chippy at West Bar, Why is Kelham Books located in Shalesmoor? Just my view I know but it saddens me to see these historic name places being lost to a marketing exercise. The very special area of Kelham Island is being slowly transformed and is becoming a shadow of what made it so special.
Ridgewalk
Far as I could see before it was developed Kelham was a decaying dump attractive to the sort of men that like to buy sex from women so desperate to feed whatever habit or escape poverty or other personal issues. it’s ok looking through rose tinted nostalgic glasses at the past but I can see many improvements to Kelham. I’d like to see Attercliffe regenerated as well. Maybe cuttsie had a point about the lack of availability of quality social housing. Broomhall feels safe to walk around these days, well Havelock Square area at least.
