All good till the internet goes down …

Do you mean internet connection? as it's impossible for the entire internet to go down that's why it was developed the way it is. A lot of card machines now also rely on 4g/5g for transactions as its faster and easily available almost everywhere. Individual glitches happen but they are not widespread.

Just to add.

Was in Wilko a while ago and their system was down so it was cash only. Used the cash machine in their store which was working instead.

How do you think plane card machines at 37000 feet make a live connection?

Answer: they dont. Yet I can still have my beer on a flight. Funny hey.

 Still flying Ryanair?

Next time visa is down, have a scan of twitter, full of paranoia

Not in this case, no. In any case the airline is irrelevant, all take payments offline.

How though? Do they store the payment until a data connection is available?

When a connection is made all payments then get processed?

If you can get the mobile phone to work on a plane then a data connection is almost guaranteed. I very much doubt they take payments offline as they need to be authorised.

My bold.

Yes, that's what I was confused about.

So they'll send the payments via the mobile phone network?

I hope they get a better connection than I do otherwise it'll take about an hour to process one sale

As said earlier, mobile 4g and now faster 5g is used a lot as it is much quicker and also widely available. Busses, trains and trams use it for transactions and to enable free wifi onboard while travelling. The internet side does not really come into play much.

A much better connection usually as there is hardly any local interference, buildings or else in the way up there.
