Jobs - Vacancies Outnumber Unemployed?

I noticed that when I was up there the other week. Lots of places closed, or offering limited menus, or no food at all.

I was astonished really. Looks likely to be a big problem as we get to mid summer.

Our chef told us about The Stables, that's actually shut as they had a disagreement with the chef, he walked out and took the other 4 with him, they left too, it's hard enough to find 1 chef let alone 5

Job vacancies outnumber the number of unemployed for the first time, according to the BBC lunchtime news.

(although Local news, same broadcast, however say there are 4+ applicants for every vacancy.)

If the top figures are correct, that should be good news shouldn't it? Yet we hear that companies can't get staff, so what's the problem? Minimum wage is supposed to be £9.50 per hour, so you'd think people  would be snatching their hand off.

Personally I think it's the quality of those jobs that is the problem. I suspect that they are the 0 hours, insecure, contract jobs that don't last long, and that you can't work your way up in, but what do I know....

Your thoughts?

Anna, tbh I thought it was supposed be £10 per hr as from this April, I will defo stand corrected on this one because Im not really sure, just heard it somewhere, probably on TV.

It might be, I just got the figures off the internet. What surprised and worried me was the age differentials:

Over23yrs - £9.50

21 - 22yrs   - £9.18

18 - 20yrs   - £6.83

under 18      -£4.81

When there's a glut of potential workers, I wonder how many over 23yr olds are 'let go' (or have their hours cut) and replaced by a kid for half the money.

Very true.   Slightly off topic but I can remember if someone worked overtime  you got time and a half and working  Saturday you got time and half, Sundays you got double time,  I could be wrong but was it time and a half for working nights or was it double time?  I woukd like to know who were the Culprit or Culprits who stopped it. People are working weekends ect for basic hourly pay these days,  its all wrong.

Why is it?  Times change.

Sunday's are no longer 'the day of rest'  just because a load of believers in a mythical sky being say it is.    We are no longer in a world of factories and manufacturers mandatory being shut down at a certain time each day each week.

Lots of job roles up and down the land have been working weekends as part of their normal duties for decades. Even the working world for the so-called White Collar office jobs is morphing into flexible, agile working which goes well beyond simply 9 to 5 Monday to Friday.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as I'm only working my contracted 5 days out of 7 I don't really care what day of the week it is.  Now if only we can abolish the stupid outdated Sunday trading nonsense.....

How did this all come about.

Because the world moves on. The way people live socialise and work changes. The birth of the internet gave us a generation of people expecting instant everything whenever they want it. The world of business and commerce has become globalised where people are working across time zones or running operations across multiple jurisdictions. We are a secular society where vast amounts of the population don't want nor choose to follow the same calendars, timings or traditional religious scheduling.

Not a bad thing in my opinion.
