Modern Life Is Rubbish

The impact analysis produced as part of the consultation process lays out the perceived financial costs and benefits of the changes to the smoke/CO regulations. You can read it here: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/domestic-smoke-and-carbon-monoxide-alarms/domestic-smoke-and-carbon-monoxide-alarms-proposals-to-extend-regulations#annex-b-analysis-of-impact

No YOU do.

You pay out £xxx every year and you don't even know why.

I do know why.

I pay for a service every 12 months because I've spent over a grand on a new boiler, so I want to make sure it is working when I need it to. That and to keep it in warranty so that if/when something does go wrong, I can get help from the manufacturer and my reliable plumber.

Oh yeah and of course I don't want it to leak, explode causing further damage to my house or my life.

Please take notice that despite me not going and getting stats to try and prove my position is a reasonable one all I need to highlight is that no one else on this thread agrees with you.  That should say all it needs to.

If you do feel as though we are in such a nanny state though feel free to stop wearing a seatbelt and go speeding down the M1

Checkers doesn’t approve of speeding at all.

Especially not in a German car.

There’s a whole thread about his obsession with that

You do talk some bull about cockatoos, Mr B.

A cockatoo isn’t dangerous.  Many people keep them in their homes for their own entertainment.

Quite right Mr. Sibon,

I bought the Cockatoo on the advice of Mr. Longprong, who said he fancied a Cockatoo in "Padders Bar"

Eileen, our temptress of a barmaid also likes a Cockatoo, as do many of our customers.

I do wish our mischievous Mr. Bloke would stop casting aspersion's on Flapper. 🦜

>> I'm not trying to prove a point for you.<<

But you are ! You are saying I am reckless or with an insufficient concern for "safety", but when I ask you to quantify that, either for gas boiler servicing, or train windows which no longer open, or house electrical checks, or (most obviously) Covid restrictions, you never come up with any stats to back your position. And, bearing in mind people like you are arguing for negative changes to people's lives and freedoms (over what they used to be) it is incumbent upon you and other people arguing for that to come up with the cast iron proof that they are necessary. Just saying "because it's safer" is meaningless because "safety" is a relative word.

As an ex landlord I complied with the relevant rules.

It was my property that I was protecting as well as the well being of my tenant.

There are good landlords and bad ones.

There are good tenants and bad ones.

Your demand for stats is impossible to give to your satisfaction. However I have seen plenty of rental properties that are well below par in many respects.

Just pitch your rent to a level that gives the return that you require.

My rented property was some distance from my home and I rented out through an agency and also paid for British Gas home care so that I did not get the panic calls if there was a problem.

.I only became a landlord incidentally rather than as a business but for 6 years it worked well for me and also for my tenant who ended up buying the property from me.

They are doing it as a practice for their real protest, which is against adults being prevented from taking photos of children in swimming costumes

I think you are getting confused between a few different issues......

It's quite simple, no parent should be stopped from taking pics of their kids undertaking a school performance, none, zero, sod all.

I wanted to watch my son, who is an exceptional swimmer, taking his school swimming lessons, from the viewing balcony BTW. There is no reason at all why I should not be allowed to do that, none, zero, zilch, FA.

I would also like to be able to video my 9 year old lad swimming freestyle as he is better than 99% of adults, so again, there is no reason why I should not be able to do that, none, zero, sweet FA.

It is disgusting that I have to go on holiday abroad where it is warm enough to swim in the pool to be able to film my lad swimming, not everyone can afford to do that and, in any case, we have not been able to do that for the last two years..... And even now it is potentially less pleasurable than it was : possible "anti Covid measures", plus potential travel chaos.

As to if adults should be stopped from taking pics of random kids in a swimming pool, that is more of a question, though, TBH, I cannot actually see why anyone, even a paedo, would want to do that for nefarious reasons. Maybe you know ? Why would they want to do that ? What would they get out of it ?

I fancy (some) adult women, but I really would not want to waste my time watching videos of women in a swimming pool, why would I ? Maybe you (or someone else on here) would know ?

By the way, if your son is an exceptional swimmer, why is he having swimming lessons?

Even Olympic champions still have lessons, though that is more accurately described as coaching.

The lessons are at school (part of the curriculum), which is why I particularly  wanted to watch them as I have spent hours and hours down at the park with most of the other kids being better at football or basketball than my lad, so I wanted to  be there when, for a change, he was the best. Most parents would empathise.......

I was also very interested how he responded to someone else coaching him, plus what they actually taught them.

Funnily enough I was talking to a swimming coach at my local pool and she was cynical about parents not being allowed to watch school swimming lessons. She said parents often watched the lessons their kids were having that they paid for (directly, as opposed to indirectly through their taxes) and that helped motivate the coaches to do a good job. School swimming coaches, she implied, often weren't very good, and as a result would not want parents watching !

It seeems to be based on a premise that some parents, may be disposed to paedo tendencies. and photographs of children sets them afire. The fact that paedo and incest and other unsavoury practices occurs mainly in the home, is lost on them.

I fear for the animals out there, not to mention the seaside holiday camp beauty contestants.

Keep your dirty cameras away from my dog, and my kids. and my beauty contestant cousin, and those dirty nudes in the museum.

"We know pornography, when we see it", say the Victorian pearl clutchers.

It was always thus!  :)

The same old tosh.

I don’t know of any school or teachers that would welcome or sanction parents to sit in on any lessons that are part of the curriculum.

Neither do I know any children that would welcome their parents turning up in their lessons.

I took my lads to swimming lessons on a Saturday morning and kept out of the way on the balcony.

My parents never attended any of my lessons and I never attended any of my sons.

Funnily enough you have found another ally .

School swimming coaches are there to teach kids the basics of swimming.

Those  who excel and maintain their enjoyment may well go on to swim competitively and benefit from more specialist coaching.

Your son should be respected amongst his peers for his ability and that should be sufficient.

A lot of irrelevant tosh there, too :)

Many moms and dads scarifice a great deal to see their children succeeed in the fields they choose.

What's wrong with a family photo (taken from the audience) of their child, recieving an award, for the family scrapbook?

As Hamlet or Juliet in the school play, or a video that priceless moment when she comes from behind in the last lap, and wins the race?

Oh, and remember:

Coaching Gives Abusers Opportunity and Trust

Dec 11, 2011 — The vast majority of sexual abuse cases are perpetrated by male coaches. Many of the scandals that have emerged over the years have involved ...

"“Because it is a large-risk environment. I don’t believe it’s that abusers are attracted to this more or less than any other profession, but it affords more opportunity. There is a lot of time spent traveling together for games, training after school away from the usual school environment. They are undressing in the locker room and showering.”
