Compare Countries

It's said that the unions got workers bank holidays and the weekend off.

Do most countries have similar holidays, religious countries at least.

Is it commonplace place to be paid extra for 'overtime', do most countries have unions?

There are only a few countries with less public holidays than the UK but many countries have more.

I reckon we could squeeze in a couple more. For example, each UK nation should have a national day, not necessarily linked to the saint's days & a public holiday say around the October half-term break.

It's a long time from the late summer Bank Holiday in August to Christmas day.

Looking at the country list, it seems that the wealthier countries have the least holidays and the poorer ones the most. Lesson here?

Too many other variables for a reliable conclusion to be drawn from just the number of bank holidays. e.g. How many days paid annual leave are typical in those countries? Investment in industrialisation/automation tends to be lower in poorer countries which has a big effect on productivity.

Perhaps it's not wealth/poor, religious countries seem to have more holidays.

But developed countries will have more employment rights to holidays, so the number of bank holidays is irrelevant.

Everytime there's a mention of increasing the number of UK Bank Holidays, we read reports of how much a Bank Holiday will affect productivity & how bad it is for the economy.  Yet we've just finished an extended Bank Holiday period & apparently, because it is linked to a Royal Jubilee event, nothing is said.  On the contrary, from all I've heard & read, this additional / extended Bank Holiday has actually been great for a number of  business sectors & been a shot in the arm for the UK economy in general.

Well it can't be both detrimental & a boost to the economy can it?
