They’re known in the trade as a CAT They are what site operatives use for detecting the actual location of a buried cable. They weren’t digging on the container project and as I understand it, the issue was with access to and potential damage to an underground sewer from the weight of the structure. harvey19
Apart from the technical problems they were an eyesore and blocked the sight line from Fargate to the Town Hall area.

hackey lad
Been down there this afternoon . Empty , soulless and sad . The stench of the diesel generator blowing down Fargate was awful .
Man in Crete
It matters not two jots how anyone tries to defend scc and in particular the inadequacies of their officers. Their errors and omissions in loosing £600k and the rest of taxpayers money should have resulted in resignations at least rather than the half hearted “apologies” now being made. Were these same errors by central government the same players would quite rightly be calling for blood instead further excuses upon excuses. This is not acceptable but hey ho nothing will change and further waste will follow thats what you get with second rate politicians overseeing incompetence amongst officers

This was only ever a temporary structure and would have been removed in any case. There were delays which meant the opening date was put back, so it wasn’t in use for as long as expected. Central government errors / overspends make £600k look like small beer. Last time I looked Crossrail was £4 BILLION overspent and HS2 many times that. So perhaps a sense of proportion might be in order. The container project cost more than envisaged and didn’t deliver the expected benefits. Regrettable, yes. Lessons to be learned, of course. End of world, no.
Meltman
Whilst £600k may be classed as small beer it seem to be £600k wasted and to many people this is 'a lot of money '. Quoting other big overspending...or wastes of money....in other parts of the country does not make this one any better. I'm sure some people fail to realise where this money comes from...it's ours, from everyone who pays a tax, not just on wages but on goods services...everything.
