Shipping Containers Coming To Fargate

This is not really a new idea, just a new way of tackling a problem that has existed forever.

Years ago, councils would build a building and make it available to small retailers and casual traders. They were called markets and from them many of todays large retailers began their businesses. Recently, some councils lost the plot and decided to gentrify their markets and in doing so removed their primary purpose leaving a void that needed filling. The use of life expired shipping containers is a start but is only really putting a spin on what is required and trying to hide their ineptitude that created this problem in the first place.

The council own a handful of retail units here and there but nothing major and nothing like a significant portion of Sheffield's retail space. I'd hazard a guess that probably 95% or more of Sheffield's retail sq ft is privately owned and leased.

Whatever the exact figure, to say the council 'own the shops in the city centre and rent them out'  is ludicrously misleading.
