Shipping Containers Coming To Fargate

There was a report on tonight's Look North.  The lead council officer on the project, Ben Brailsford was interviewed while sat among the containers & Look North did asked if an elected councilor(s) could also offer a view on the project but none were available. I guess all 80 odd of them must be really, really busy, including the leader & his deputy?

Mr Brailsford, said (Paraphrasing), there's 6 excellent retail outlets offering people something they normally wouldn't be experiencing in that part of the city centre.

When quizzed on the future of the containers, there's a report going to the council in January but as yet & the containers will be moved in the Spring to another site but no decision will be made on the new site until after the report has been discussed.

When the interview took place, presumably this afternoon, there were about 4 other people sat in amoungst the containers.  It was also mentioned that there's little chance of the upstairs bar opening.

Hmmm...

Well that makes sense now!

Ben Brailsford...
... presumably one half of the "Bill & Ben" team responsible for the giant flower pots? :hihi:

But to give him some credit, he does have a BA in Sports Management...
... so he's obviously well qualified to be "Interim Head of City Centre Management, Parking and CCTV at Sheffield City Council" (from LinkedIn)

6 retail outlets ? I saw 5 stalls

Yes 6 retail outlets.  Just checked tonight's Look North on the BBC iPlayer.

Quote from council officer, Ben Brailsford, "6 fantastic retail units with 6 independent Sheffield businesses doing great trade in the city centre and offering something a bit different to what people would have experienced otherwise. "

Mr Brailsford must have been the counci officer who I heard on Radio Sheffield's news last week.  So although SCC has gone through around 4% of the Govt grant, (apparently the current costs when everything is included & taken into account is closer to £600,000 rather than £400,000), according to Mr Brailsford, SCC have actually purchased the containers outright. So they're now part of the city's assets & presumably as its mine & yours council tax that's paid for them, they're all ours?

I could do with somewhere to store the excess junk I've in the shed.

He used to be the major events manager and he’s been parking services manager for the past few years. So, he knows the city centre and how it all works better than most and he’s a very nice chap too.

Do his responsibilities include deterring people from visiting the city centre by car?

His team don’t set the parking charges, rules or policies, they just enforce them.

Parking rules, charges or enforcement don’t deter most folk from visiting the city centre. It’s what anyone would expect in a major city.

There’s plenty of parking in the city centre, it’s easy to get to and the prices are reasonable compared to similar cities. Most of the off street parking is private sector controlled anyway.
