Southey Green/S5 Opinions

Recommended Posts

Hello,
Me and my family are planning to relocate from Buckinghamshire to Sheffield. We recently had a baby and we want a bigger house and as the rental prices for 3 beds in SE are insane we decided to try North of England.
We've found a lovely house in the Southey Green area, just south of Buchanan Road. We don't know Sheffield very well, apart from the few visit during camping trips to peaks which we really enjoyed!
Can we have some opinions about how the place is in 2022? We, unfortunately, saw few bad opinions about the area which got us worried, with some people even saying to "AVOID at all costs". We are not looking for anything fancy but we don't want to end up in an unsafe, deprived neighbourhood.

Thank you for all the help!

It’s nowhere as bad as portrayed nowadays.   Loads of new houses going up and most are sold allready and not even finished yet

I wouldn't choose to live round there if you can help it.

What is your budget for renting your 3bed per month?

Thanks scottf could you justify your opinion please?
Hmm, we have around £1000pm to spend. I think the biggest issue is to get any viewing at all! We send around ~150 applications in last 4 weeks and secured only 2 viewings. Market is insane ATM.

I know people who live around there and they have seen multiple occasions of police chases, gang violence and drug dealing- im sure its not bad all the time but its generally known as one of the more dodgier areas of sheffield.

I apprecaiate that viewings are a struggle. Have you tried looking further out? There are some places in Rotherham which are better value for money? this for example- https://www.elr.co.uk/properties/14722387/lettings

or somewhere like this - https://www.elr.co.uk/properties/15510661/lettings

With your budget, you have got a range of areas you could consider.

As with many large Cities, the areas in Sheffield vary considerably in terms of housing types, access to open space, quality of transport links to the City Centre and Meadowhall, quality of district centres and schools. Depending on the kind of lifestyle you currently have and what you want to have here, I would make sure that the area you choose to look at considers this.

Anecdotally, demand for property rental is crazy at the moment.

Also been considering this area.  Myself and my partner have been looking for a 2-3 bed place but really struggling to get any viewings.  I live in a council flat currenltly but no chance of getting a bigger one as we do not have children.

I don't think the area is all that bad as others have said a lot of new houses being built its not the best but not the worst.

Can i ask why you are wanting the council to give you a 2-3 bed house when you don't have any children? Surely you must realise they will give this to someone who needs it more?
