Has Free To View Telly Ever Been This Bad?

So many channels, so little to watch.

Freeview is now dire, with nothing but constant repeats and rehashing of old programmes. The same films are shown over and over again.

Even the BBC, for which we pay a licence fee, has very little new to offer. A recent survey found that in June, BBC3 and BBC4 spent 85% and 87% of airtime showing repeats (BBC2 52%) BBC1 did a bit better, but much of the broadcasts were sport.

Sometimes the same programme is repeated twice in one day. It's really not good enough.

Sure you can pay for different 'platforms' but there are now so many, with something you want to see, always on the one you haven't got!

Spot on with the freeview comment Anna.

They've been showing James Bond movies for what seems like years.

Part of it is down to the increased and better funded US/UK services outbidding terrestrial channels for the premium TV content (sports, big name TV series, lives events etc) and popular TV personalities who attract viewers, part of it (certainly for the BBC) is down to deliberate Government intervention to both cut the amount of funding they have by 25% compared to 2010 and to dictate how some of the remaining funding is spent, like forcing them to fund the Government political policy for free TV licences for over 75s out of the BBC budget.

The result is that terrestrial services have less money to spend on content but still have to fill the same number of hours. They have much less to invest in big 'event' tv but have to pay more for it as they still need it in order to attract viewers so we get more repeats to fill up the schedules, more dirt cheap but unfathomably (imo) popular TV shows like all the Great British Whatever shows and reality TV pretending to be documentaries and a lot less new and original drama and big prime-time films etc.

Has anyone noticed  that every time M*A*S*H finishes on what is now called Great! TV Sky ch 157 or Freeview ch50 it starts again from the very beginning they have been doing it for years. Bet if the actors had repeat fees in their contract they must be laughing, well those still with us anyway. I wish they would put some old classic programmes on like The Untouchables with Robert Stack.

Always wondered why its never been on before, and here it is.

Hope it's as good as I remember, brilliant programme as I remember.
