Milk And Freezing It

Recommended Posts

The Co-op is not saying that the milk 'goes off'.

There are three things going on with milk in  freezer.

1. High fat content milk has a tendancy to separate when frozen.

2. The fat will chemically change over time (go rancid) despite being frozen.

3. Freezer quality, operation and management and defrosting methods, cleanliness and hygene may be substandard.

It is practically impossible to drink 'gone off' milk and while most foods can be frozen for years without harm to health, it is usually the flavour or texture changes which make food unsatisfactory. Their 'guidance' is there to tell you how long you can expect the milk to be safe and 'nice' to drink. Personal preferences could well mean that you exceed that date and some retailers have been criticized for being too cautious.

As with anything else you freeze- small quantities, as fresh as possible, as quickly as possible, not in bulk and keep your freezer full.
