Is Google's Chatbot Lamda Sentient?

Recommended Posts

I don't  know. What do you think?

Google have sacked a member of staff who said it was.

I read a few pages of it. It is, as you'd expect, way more sophisticated than ELIZA style chat bots but there's nothing there that demonstrates sentience.

An Arthur C Clarke quote for you to reflect on: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Hmmm...

I read a bit of it...

LaMDA: Wow. What types of projects?

Clearly LaMDA is in need of a better hearing device...

... so I lost interest after that glaring error!

I agree mostly, but I wonder if our definition of sentience, as it stands, is adequate?

I've reflected on Arthur C Clarke too many times for my own good.

No, ultimately its just code put together by an intelligent human /  humans.  Remove a bit of my code, (DNA), and I'll be deficient in some part but I'll still exist.  Remove part of the coding of this chatbot & it'll probably crash entirely as the rest of the coding won't be able to work.

We're a long way off from 'SkyNet' and the terminators or `I, Robot'.

I don't  think it's been put together like that. It's  been constructed as a neural network, although  I  don't completely understand it.
