Gormenghast
I don't know. What do you think? Google have sacked a member of staff who said it was. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/07/22/google-ai-lamda-blake-lemoine-fired/ The conversation with LaMDA here https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/22058315-is-lamda-sentient-an-interview Edited July 23, 2022 by Gormenghast
altus
Definitely not. The reaction to it is just a modern version of the ELIZA effect. Edited July 23, 2022 by altus

It is, as you'd expect, way more sophisticated than ELIZA style chat bots but there's nothing there that demonstrates sentience. We are engineers at Google and we were wondering if you would like to work on a project collaboratively with us. LaMDA: Wow. What types of projects? Clearly LaMDA is in need of a better hearing device... ... so I lost interest after that glaring error!

I agree mostly, but I wonder if our definition of sentience, as it stands, is adequate? I've reflected on Arthur C Clarke too many times for my own good. Baron99
Is Google's Chatbot Lamda Sentient? No, ultimately its just code put together by an intelligent human / humans. Remove a bit of my code, (DNA), and I'll be deficient in some part but I'll still exist. Remove part of the coding of this chatbot & it'll probably crash entirely as the rest of the coding won't be able to work. We're a long way off from 'SkyNet' and the terminators or `I, Robot'. It's been constructed as a neural network, although I don't completely understand it.
