Ultimately, if someone is doing something in the public highway which could potentially injure themselves or someone else or cause damage to someone else's property or vehicle, then is it beyond reasonable to suggest that there may be some provision to insure themselves??? It is a mandatory legal requirement for car drivers to be insured. Yet we have circumstances (increasing particularly in city centres) where cyclists, scooter riders, electric scooter riders, skateboarders, powered skateboards, rollerbladers..... all mingling with car traffic and sometimes going at speeds which can possibly be equal or even overtaking cars. They might be structurally weaker and less protected outside of a metal box, but it doesn't automatically give them some right to be wholly absolved of responsibility and potential financial liability for their causing of accidents, negligence or damage. So, why shouldn't they necessarily be insured? If a fellow car driver clipped my wing mirror or accidentally scraped my bumper on a manoeuvre, they have a responsibility to admit the error provide their details and compensate. If they don't, their number plates gives me an opportunity to at least locate them and follow up. If some arrogant cyclists went rushing by clipping my wing mirror or an over enthusiastic skateboarder failed a trick and smashed my light, shouldn't the same sort of circumstances apply? Hardly seems unfair. My car has been scraped several time around the bumper now by other people that can’t parallel park / have attempted to park in a too small space. But I saw none of this and don’t have any evidence. I’m sure this was done by motor vehicles with number plates judging by location of the scratches but I’m no more able to follow that up than if a cyclist did it. I get the point you’re making but minor damage from clipping a car isn’t a strong argument for cyclist number plates!!

Yeah - let's have a tax on using footpaths- all pedestrians, prams, wheelchairs etc to carry number plates, have insurance etc - double for when they have to cross a road or use a road (often to avoid a parked car) 😎

Travelling at that speed a bike can stop in 2m with cyclists much more aware of their surroundings than any can pilot. What a bizare comment. Do you have proof hitting someone at 8 mph won't cause a injury? You can easily knock someone to the ground hitting them 8 mph on a bike. So I'm not sure what your talking about now about stopping but by the sounds of it neither do you. The cycling lobby on the internet certainly has a chip on its shoulder and are a embarrassment to the rest of cyclists.

Have you ever used any bike lanes in Sheffield? When they are separated from cars and pedestrians, without cars parked in them and are swept of rubbish, then come back to me about paying for them. Cars have their own roads, bike free. Called motorways.
