Thats because ropers tipped the waste from uc on shirecliffe tip, but funny thing is the rabbits lived among the bags of the waste.

Don't know about bags or rabbits but I do know that .and have seen Roper's empty the black/grey carbon dust from an open top hydrolic lorry and I once worked for a firm who s lorry  used to empty raw Asbestos ((not from UC  I  must stress) on Shirecliffe tip. In both cases with no supervision from Sheffield council (or tip employees) who owned the land . Perhaps these are stories for another day.

There were two sides to the tip one was Sheffield city council which took the ashes from Bernard road incinerator and also ran the Douglas road civic amenities site which is now run by Veolia.

The other half was Parkwood Landfill which in fairness was a Special Waste licensed site and was allowed by their permit to accept hazardous waste and had the backing of the Environment agency who paid regular visits to the site.

Hope this helps.

Well before that it was Northern Strip Mining, Neepsend Power Station, Ropers,  Neepsend Gas Co., and the Yorkshire Electricity Board.

John Roper had half the site and Vinnie Maher had the other all the land was owned by the Duke of Norfolk who reclaimed it back in the mid 80s,

i think the gas and electricity was further down Parkwood road near the old Monkey pub now La Pla hyrolics

Then you are misinformed Ropers took the tip over from the NSM, from the back of Musgrave Road , Vinnie had the gas works site at the gasworks and left it in a mess with thousands of tons of rubbish to be removed it always belonged to the Duke as did the whole Parkwood, the gas and electricity tip was on the top end of the  un-tarmacked part of Parkwood Road beyond the railway bridge.

My mate worked in a rolling mill on Claywheels lane. I think it was Balfours or Darwins and it was practically in beely woods beside the Don.

The works that was in Beeley Woods (past Union Carbide) was Beeley Wood Forge, they belonged to Sheffield Forge and Rolling Mills that was in Bridge Street?Millsands next to Whitbread's brewery. I think the old BWF premises are stlll there but perhaos not as a forge.

when i first started work on the tip in 1987 Vinnie Maher had the left hand side of the tip as you passed the bridge and John Roper who i worked for at the time had the right he then sold the skip side to Drinkwater Sabey so the Duke reclaimed the tip and paid Vinnie off for the rest of his lease so he could open Parkwood Landfill ltd, then Vinnie moved to the old gas works and used it as a transfer station, the site was cleared and is now Arthurs waste.
