I have just checked our speed using the BT checker, download is 37MB/sec, upload 8MB/sec. The interesting thing is when we swapped from our old 4MB/sec connection there was hardly any difference in the speed of websites we were using because, we assume, the limiting factor was the speed of the websites host ? So I am a bit cynical about all this "we'll get you a higher speed" sales pitch ! I admit the upload speeds were far better though. I suppose it depends what one uses the internet connection for.... Internet speeds are usually quoted in megabits per second (Mb/s) rather than megabytes (MB/s). 8 Mb/s will allow an upload speed of 1 MB/s. Chekhov
How long do you reckon it will take to upload 975MB on an 8MB/sec upload speed connection ? Or is it simply dividing one by the other ? I have never uploaded a file as big as 975MB before, is it pretty standard ? No problems to be expected ? Ghozer
All things being perfect, it should take ~20 mins ish.... however, because this is the 'real world' and nothing is ever perfect, and there are other things to consider (your computers overheads, the servers overheads etc... ) and the fact that it has to physically STOP uploading, then START again, for each individual picture, you could add a couple of seconds each picture easily. i'm surprised you are on such a slow connection, even the slowest ones now are usually better than 8Mb/upload.. Also, don't confuse MB and Mb (note the B and b) Bytes and bits... you have 975 MegaBYTES your upload is 8Mega-bits 8Mega-bits is equivelent to 1MegaBYTE https://www.matisse.net/bitcalc/ and https://downloadtimecalculator.com/Upload-Time-Calculator.html Edited September 7, 2022 by Ghozer

You're not uploading a 1GB file.... You're uploading 169 files, totalling around 1GB in size... You may be better doing them in batches of 15 or 20 or something..... This is where it starts getting complicated, I am not sure Snapfish or whoever, would let you make multiple uploads for the same order. And even if they do having to upload 170 files in batches of 20 is starting to get quite complicated, wouldn't it be easier to, err, send a DVD ! ? ! Chekhov
Thanks for all your help, I used Snapfish in the end. I uploaded 168 pics, total file size 990MB, on a 8Mb/sec upload connection and it took about 15 minutes. After I'd uploaded them (and selected 6x4 prints) the system told me that three of the pics would come out better "no cropping" if printed out at 5.3" x 4" (which is 1.333 aspect ratio), would I like it to automatically do that ? I clicked yes despite the fact I thought I had altered all the images to 3X2 (= 1.5 aspect ratio) Here : https://support.snapfish.com/hc/en-us/articles/226720108-Best-Fit-print-size-for-True-Digital-prints-with-no-cropping I am assuming their system cannot allow for more obscure aspect ratios, like on panoramic shots. The price was £20.23 including carriage (Second class due Sat to the following Weds for an order booked Tuesday). Harrison's (who I have been using for about 15 years, before the put their prices up by 150%) wanted about £45 excluding carriage. Chekhov
Apparently Photobox do "non crop" photo printing, they call it "shrink to fit". I did a test upload / edit and I think you have to individually tick the box for "shrink to fit" for every file, but that can be done without having to individually open up each one, so it isn't as bad as it sounds : https://faq.photobox.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360019421477-How-can-I-change-the-cropping-of-my-print- There is still an issue with these mass market photo printers cropping off the edge of the picture though. On a batch I just had done with Snapfish they cropped off about 3% each side, so that's 6% over all ! The only way around that is to add a border, though that can be done as a batch process relatively easily, I used Irfan : https://www.irfanview.com/64bit.htm How I used it to batch process is here (though if using Photobox's "shrink to fit" one assumes you do not have to add a canvas) : https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/recommendations-for-6x4-non-crop-photo-printing.741672/post-9237035 Edited November 15, 2022 by Chekhov
