It must be at least 50 years since this myth started- it was easily disproved then and it is even easier now.

Really?

Things like winter fuel allowance, TV License and even a free bus pass should be means tested.

It shouldn't be free because of age

I agree. They are just a gimmick to excuse paying the lowest old age pension in the civilised world.

Households earning plenty of money, still getting child benefit. Wealthy pensioners still getting winter fuel allowance.

They would be sensible and easy cuts to make.

Households paying or who have paid plenty of tax, getting a tiny proportion of it back would be a more reasonable viewpoint.

We already have a progressive tax system that focuses everything on the less well off and punishes thrift and effort. Means testing everything is an expensive complication.

They were giving winter fuel allowance to pensioners who were living in places like Australia and Benidorm

These Mick Jagger examples appear all the time, the media love to moan about it to agitate the lefties. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. They fund it all. Presumably Sugar doesn't use it, so it just goes into the coffers.

Aircon can be expensive too

Many pensioners living abroad get no inflationary increase in their state pension

It can be simplified by using the Victorian phrase of The Deserving and the Undeserving.

Due to media sensationalism it is the undeserving who get the publicity.

Regarding child allowance, winter fuel allowance, bus passes etc.  it would be a nightmare to means test the eligible population and what would happen if circumstances changed. Plus do not forget these people have paid into the system and the higher tax payers paid in more than others.

I believe that you cannot claim the pension increases, if you live in certain countries.
