Is It Time To Nationalise Our Steel Production?

If folk like me, who naively voted for Brexit, had voted to stay within the EU, perhaps community ownership would have been a possibility.

You want control but you want to stay in the EU?

Seems like a contradiction

It make sense to nationalise the remaining big steel plants. The owners of these plants will continue to ask for subsidies or bailouts when ever there is an opportunity to do so.

Nationalisation is the biggest bail out there is.

They'll be putting all those steelworkers on the government payroll, and hiring the top execs to run it for them.

Then they'll still have to deal with those cheap exports from China, India and Russia.

Yeah the hard left unions will run the industry into the ground for political points scoring

Now we have left the EU we can charge whatever tariffs we like so can be more competitive

However, our energy costs and green taxes make our steal expensive compared to China which is state sponsored

Mores the point - how on earth, in 2020, did the government watch British steel be bought out of insolvency by a Chinese company?

Incompetence.

As in the other thread, does the general public know enough about steel production, to know how it should be run?

The EU wanted to impose tariffs on steel from China, but the UK government opposed it. If we had tariffs, would that help?

I prefer businesses to run companies, but government can run companies if there is no competition.

One of the biggest steel-making plants left (Sheffield Forgemasters River Don site) is already 'nationalised' - it now belongs to the MoD.
