Midi Keyboard

Recommended Posts

A friend unearthed an old keyboard in her loft and was hoping it could be used as a conventional keyboard when plugged (somehow) into her 9 year-old grandson's Chromebook.

It's an Evolution MK-125 and just has one Midi-out 5 pin DIN socket on the rear.

I know next to nothing about Midis, is it feasible or not worth persuing?

no

you can get a converter to convert it to usb midi, (roland amongst others make them), which will work with windows, but you could also just buy a new keyboard with usb midi for not much more.

Financially, probably not

a roland um-one (usb-din midi adapter) is about £42 , works on w7, w10

there are cheaper alternatives, but then you have the problem of chromebook compatibility and apps on top.

compared to being able to buy a full working keyboard for £55 upwards from argos.

If you have any old pc's hanging around with a midi card installed, it's a different matter.

if they take an interest in it, there's a ton of free software that emulates old synthesisers, a midi able keyboard is very useful for that
