carosio
A friend unearthed an old keyboard in her loft and was hoping it could be used as a conventional keyboard when plugged (somehow) into her 9 year-old grandson's Chromebook. It's an Evolution MK-125 and just has one Midi-out 5 pin DIN socket on the rear. I know next to nothing about Midis, is it feasible or not worth persuing? fools
no you can get a converter to convert it to usb midi, (roland amongst others make them), which will work with windows, but you could also just buy a new keyboard with usb midi for not much more. carosio
ok, probably not worth persuing then.
fools
Financially, probably not a roland um-one (usb-din midi adapter) is about £42 , works on w7, w10 there are cheaper alternatives, but then you have the problem of chromebook compatibility and apps on top. compared to being able to buy a full working keyboard for £55 upwards from argos. If you have any old pc's hanging around with a midi card installed, it's a different matter. if they take an interest in it, there's a ton of free software that emulates old synthesisers, a midi able keyboard is very useful for that Edited October 8, 2022 by fools
carosio
Thanks for the detailed advice, as mentioned it's whether they take an interest in it (trying to get them off youtube etc!).
