If you are talking about foreign Nationals who break the law surely there are international rules about returning the countries citizen. I believe Australia deport foreigners who break their laws , no ifs and buts. whilst on the matter of deportation, I believe that the human rights argument is wrong in allowing criminals to stay. Any dependents of the criminal should be given the choice to stay or go with their criminal partner.
bassett one
but do we have empty hotels to take them? does SCC have big buildings that could be used then we could cash in and help the coffers?

I don't see how they can refuse to take their own countrymen. If they are economic migrants, they are not our problem and I wouldn't care where they went. In any case, our rules should be that, even genuine refugees will only be considered and allowed to stay if they have entered this country in a legal manner. Anyone arriving on a rubber dinghy across the channel should not be even considered for asylum whatever their reasons. We also need to introduce identity cards to flush out those who are already here illegally. Maybe then, we could really help genuine refugees in a proper manner but they do all need sorting out first. Time also to think about where they are all going to live as we don't have enough housing for people who already live here. A massive and unprecedented house building program is badly needed but our government refuse to invest.

The reality is that the Home Office will enter in to contracts with hotels for use as family accommodation, without consulting the Local Authority. We recently had the case of the 5 year old falling out of a hotel window in Sheffield (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/aug/25/afghan-boy-5-fell-sheffield-hotel-car-park-roof-inquest-told) . This approach places the Local Authority in a difficult position of having to deal with any issues, along with the Police and other statutory agencies. Also as Tory backbenchers revolt against hotels being used in their area (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/nov/02/tory-mps-councils-resist-home-office-plans-asylum-seekers-hotels), for political expediency, non-Tory areas will no doubt be used for accommodating refugees/economic migrants. The Home Office has a contract for sourcing accommodation for people in this situation. I'm guessing that a lack of affordable housing is driving this use of hotels and the overcrowding at Manston (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/nov/03/manston-asylum-centre-not-operating-legally-concedes-minister) Underlying all of this is a lack of investment in the public sector, and issues with France caused by Brexit. Also, surely, our economy is in desperate need of people for jobs- why can't the skilled migrants be acknowledged as economic migrants and go to find work in our economy. Let’s have another page hall/ firvale….. why not put them next door to councillors who support the idea? we already take our fair share and given the vast majority of current migrants are Albanian they have no rights to be here and should be sent straight back . This city has more than its fair share of organised crime and the rate will sky rocket if they arrive en mass City of Sanctuary relates to asylum seeker and refugees. Many of the most recent residents of Page Hall/Firvale are European, from Slovakia. They started to come here around 2004 when a certain Tony Blair opened UK borders wider than the rest of Western Europe. They are neither asylum seekers nor refugees.

pattricia
It’s strange that the migrants complain of having nothing, yet they paid people smugglers for a place on the boat !

People who have "nothing" in this country have to pay money (£600?) to go bankrupt. Its the exact same principle, if you have £100 to your name you cant buy a house or even rent or, so they give it to a people smuggler for a spot on a boat, with the promise of a shiny new life at the end of it.
