I live in the USA, my wife, who is a dark skinned Puerto Rican lady , once asked me, what did some British people call people that had her same skin colour. I replied 'Darkies' and her retort was that was so trite and corny as if not heard before. So I said 'Blackies then', Her response was - almost choking with mirth- on the meal she was eating  and have  not seen the good woman bent over so much with laughing since our last viewing of a Marx Brother's film.
