What Makes A Politician?

Recommended Posts

Ridiculous post. Utterly ludicrous.

We’ve got a fair few bent politicians, it is true. But most work hard for their constituents and to  try to make the country a better place.

Take Olivia Blake, for example. She’s been up in Stannington for most of the last week, making sure that the poor side with no gas or electricity get proper help from the companies which have let them down.

Here you are:

That’s a politician.

In my opinion :  Never done a real days work, the ability to shout and scream like a two year old, with debating skills to match and most important of all, be able to fiddle the system to their advantage. And this applies to both sides of the House.

What’s your definition of a real days work?

Sometimes I think that it's a good idea for MPs to have held down a job in the 'real world' for at least 10 years. However there are exceptionally gifted politicians like the late Charles Kennedy, who IIRC was still in his 20s when he won his seat.

Highlighted bit - thanks for your opinion, but it doesn't change mine.  As far as I know, this incident was due to a water main bursting, and  due to an unfortunate set of circumstances - no I don't know what they were - the water got into the gas network. As I understand it, once the gravity of the situation was realised, efforts were made to deal with it.

I've not been following it closely, but I  understand the City Council declared a 'State of Emergency' and put the wheels in motion. So, OK, the local MP gets involved - rightly - but what more can she and 'her team' do?

Agreed, @Mister M, and thanks for a considered response.

They need to be outgoing and sociable, which is why Jared Omara failed.

They need to be good talkers and confident, willing to put the job of MP before their family.

Some can be good people, it's just a job, many salesmen lie through their teeth, just like MPs

Another considered reply - thank you.

'It's just a job' - true, but an important one to be taken seriously..

But that opens up a whole can of worms. According to some, unless they've worked down the mines or shovelling piles of cement or scrubbing floors, it's not a proper job.

You will find that lots of MPs have had jobs in the so called real world. They have been lawyers, doctors, journalists, academics, researchers, analysts, company directors, department managers, consultants, bankers, traders....  However, to many of the ill-informed masses, being white collar, sitting behind a desk, tapping away on a computer and delegating orders doesn't count as 'proper jobs'
