There is no such thing as Road Tax. You pay Vehicle Excise Duty. Roads are paid for by both National government and by Local government in the usual crazy complicated way that this country usually does thing nowadays. To simplify, the money comes partly from General Taxation and Partly from Council Tax. If you don't like paying Excise duty on 2 vehicles, there is an easy way. Get rid of one.. It's still not cyclists fault. Edited March 10, 2023 by Organgrinder

That's right, but whichever way one labels the charge, as soon as vehicle tyre meets public tarmac (with some noteable exceptions), an official bill lands on Registered Keeper's doormat, so to speak. In addition, Duty (and VAT) is levied on fuel so this can be represented as a "charge per mile", the more one travels, the more one pays.

That may be so but, that money is not reserved for spending on roads. We all pay for the roads. motorists, cyclists, pedestrians etc. I'm quite sure that, over time, most cycles will have electric motors besides cars and other vehicles. They will also be paying for their fuel. Bottom line is, we all pay for the roads & pavements one way or another, through local and government taxes. Again I agree, I'm just pointing out the fact that their is a specific tax/charge/duty levied for using or keeping a motor vehicle on the public highway over and above general taxation as mentioned, whether it is reserved for roads or not. Yes there is, and that money goes straight into the general taxation pot, as does tobacco tax, alcohol tax etc. Whatever we do and whatever we buy, we are all paying for everything around us. Mike 1961 seems to think that cyclists are the only ones who don't pay, and comes across to me as just plain anti-cyclist.

I am not anti cyclists at all ,I just think cyclists need some type of registration and specific taxation that's all.

Registered for what and Taxed for what? Would this apply to pedestrians too. Despite your denials, you don't like cyclists. You are not on your own so why deny it. What difference does it, or did it, make to you whether I was registered and whether I paid taxation When I used my bike. I was still paying for the roads exactly the same as you.
