there will not be any change as they are still being "advised" by the same people.

Well, no they are not.

People move on, or retire.

Certainly at SCC in terms of transport and highways, the whole management team from director down to team managers has changed in recent years.

The decision makers get the best advice available. Private sector expertise is brought in if the council don’t have it.

The decision makers ie the lead councillors, also change regularly.

You may not like the decisions made, but it isn’t down to the quality of advice the decision makers receive ( they sometimes don’t follow the advice anyway).

If you deal with other councils in other areas, you hear exactly the same complaints from people. I wouldn’t view that as indicating systematic incompetence across local government it’s more related to the fact that these are large organisations, dealing with a very wide range of services and issues. The decisions made are never going to please everyone. It’s fine to disagree with decisions, that’s why they are taken by democratically accountable people.

To be honest I don't think the level of incompetence and wasting of tax payers money is just something that SCC are guilty of ,it's many councils up and down the country. But Sheffield City Council have made some really costly bad mistakes over the years.

In terms of transport and highways, the vast majority of the funding comes from government, so local councils are basically just implementing government policy and applying some local priorities. You see the same issues in most places and the potential solutions are the same ones.

Some councils have better resources than others, but that’s usually down to the size of the organisation and the amount of money they get. Smaller authorities struggle for staff in my area of work and often have to employ private sector people / organisations to do the work, especially on bigger schemes.

Any organisation that spends £1.5 billion a year is not going to get everything right all the time whether they be a public organisation or a private company.

We've seen enough of SCC's incompetent planning and execution over the years to know it's not gonna get any better till we remove them from office or start holding them accountable for wasting taxpayer cash, especially in the current economic climate.

Am I right in thinking you're a right wing political supporter (if not I apologise)? I am no supporter of SCC but the government you support has hardly been squeaky clean in the efficiency department.

Bloke who lives at number 26 drives a complete heap of junk, it's a 15 plate so about time it went on the scrap, plus his car brings the neighbourhood down

Anyone driving though our neighbourhood would look at his car and think what sort of people live on this road?

Maybe charge anyone who owns an 18 plate or older £50 to drive through the clean air zone?

Why are people driving 5 year old cars, when there are electric cars available?

(I have to point out that we have got a 22 plate electric car, and we get our 23 plate brand new car in a couple of months)

Bonkers

Sign put up last week at the bottom of London Rd, (just outside the Chinese Fireworks building), just before you'd join the CAZ on the ring road at Saint Mary's Gate.

I'd have put it further up London Rd to give motorists the opportunity to turn left on to Boston St & possibly avoid the CAZ.  By the time you reach the CAZ sign, you're already committed to entering the CAZ.

I drove down there last night.

There is actually a sign next to the Potato Oven, about 50/100 yards before you turn left to Boston St, but it helpfully states that the CAZ is in THREE MILES and doesnt suggest turning left to avoid it.

@Planner1who do you report such idiocy to, any ideas?

Is it a temporary sign advising the CAZ is going to happen? What’s it fixed to?

If it says 3 miles, you might suspect it’s been put there in error

I tend to use Fix My Street  It gets sent to the council.

Or you can go direct and fill in a council online form

Its a proper sign, on a pole, with the same symbol on it as all the others. Doesnt look temporary.

Ok. That does look to be an ideal spot to have the zone boundary warning sign, as there’s a turnoff shortly after it, before you enter the zone.

I’d suspect the contractor has put the wrong sign on the pole, so if you report it I’d guess it will get changed.

My bold.

Well at least it'll keep the solicitors / lawyers specialising in getting motorists off on traffic fine offences on technicalities such as inadequate signage, in work.

I reported it earlier, assume it will be changed in the next few weeks.
