Sheffield Wednesday Fc V Port Vale

The first 40mins were the best we've played for weeks, I thought the penalty was a bit harsh on Vale but we were running them ragged, Smith took his pen well with no nonsense. We seemed to ease off a little towards the end of the half and carried this into the second, PV seized the initiative and started creating a few things, the Owls defence stood firm though, Smith again popped up with a cracking finish to seal the game and put us joint 2nd in the table.

Wednesday pressed up high from the kick off and Vale were swamped in the first half, they struggled to pass and were under constant pressure, but again just one goal to show for all the dominance, when the PV defender inexplicably handled with absolutely no danger and the ball going away from their box, smashed home by Smith.

PV brought two wingers on for the start of the 2nd half and the tables turned dramatically, Bannan having limped off again to be replaced by vaulks midway through the 1st half and suddenly it was us under the cosh, Vale missing a golden opportunity to equalize with only Dawson to beat but skied his shot from 10 yards.

The game was over in the 70th minute when Smith rounded defenders and smashed home a cracker from the edge of the box to the keepers left corner, which knocked some of the fight out of them.Wednesday saw the game out but palmer went down with what looked like a groin injury in stoppage time which could have repercussions to an already depleated defence,

Just 2 shots on target at home seems very bad indeed,o.k we might have got 3 points, but whos going to create chances if we lose Bannan again,we might have got a good defending midfield, but we need a midfielder who can score regulary to take the pressure off our strikers,Wing play from Johnson or Mighten needs improving alot, even a John Pearson mentioned this last night,Smith loves crosses into the box but we just don"t do this enough for him, just  hope we strengthen in midfield with a goal scoring one

I said at the end of last season, if we were going to play the same way this wed need two younger, fitter, better crossers on either side and weve gone with the same set up.
