When Will The Roadworks At Saltersbrook Bridge (Woodhead) Be Finished ?

I regularly drive to Chapel St Leonards from the South East of Sheffield and take typically 1hour 45minutes...ish. I use A roads mainly with a short section of the A1 (70 mph sometimes possible). I drive to the conditions, weather, traffic, road etc and try to not break the speed limits. I get annoyed when I come up behind someone who insists on driving at 10 mph below the speed limit when the above conditions are suitable.  I often find these people slow down to 30 mph in a 40 zone and 20 mph in a 30 zone...why?

I confess I sometimes get frustrated in a 30 or 40 if that happens (but not in a 60), but I console myself with the fact iof I saw some **** doing 10 or 20 over the speed limit I really would get angry rather than a bit frustrated.

Google reports Waterthorpe (which is well SE of Sheff) to Chapel St Leonards as being 103 miles (via the M180) and taking about 2Hr 10 min. If you are saying you could do it in 1hr 45min that would be 59mph average .

Or 89 miles via Lincoln (2hr 15min) which would equate to a 51mph average, but almost all on single carriageway roads max speed 60, but also sections of 50, 40 and even 30 mph plus many junctions/lights/pedestrian crossings where you actually have to stop, plus much slower traffic and traffic queues.

So, 1Hr 45min for either route would be almost impossible, if sticking to the speed limits and driving safely

BTW, are you the same Mr Meltman who was/is **** scared of Covid (and kids having their picture taken) ?

If so I'd read up on risk probability if I were you.

It's called being a competant driver with IAM, Blue Light and other addtional vehicle control training.  Having a very capable, extremely well maintained vehicle. Tyres and brakes that aren't budget/part worn (which should be banned IMO). Unlike most drivers on the road, I inspect my car very regularly, at least one a week & before a long trip.

These mean being able to hold a higher road speed (under the limit before you start crying about speeding again) & not panic braking for every 1° bend in the road.

Not many hit 60 from zero in under 7 seconds  (not fully loaded but ain't far off)

Driving fast and acheiving a shorter trip time doesn't mean speeding.

What is your horse called

Mods - could this thread be renamed 'the quickest way to get to Skegness' please so that it's not misleading for anyone wanting to find out when the roadworks at Saltersbrook Bridge (Woodhead) will be finished

I agree, can we drop this or at least split it off somewhere else, I actually want to know about Saltersbrook Bridge (Woodhead),

I don't know about scared of covid, I've had it, but I've no idea what it has to do with driving to Skegness....seems strange to mention it!

I don't usually travel 103 miles to Chapel and I don't start from Waterthorpe either. I know the route you quote as I sometimes go that way if I've been to the daughters first.

The roadworks will be finished......eventually.....probably.  You don't expect anyone to work out in the wilds, in bad weather and during the Christmas break do you?  I  pass loads of 'roadworks ' where there is no sign of any work taking place (for what ever reason before anyone makes an excuse) , and many times with poorly timed/ broken traffic lights.

But they've been working on that for years ! Does anyone know exactly what they're doing and when it might be finished ?

It's not even as if it's a big bridge ! ! !

It has been cynically hinted that the bridge is too weak and those lights are just going to be left there to limit the maximum weight over it, surely that cannot be true ? It's the main road from Sheff and the M1 to Manchester !

  • 3 months later...

Went up Woodhead the other week, those roadworks at Salters Brook are still there, with no work being done, and huge queues.

I found this on the net dated 7 Nov 22

I now have an update on the roadworks at Salters brook Bridge..
You may be aware there was an RTC that impacted the wall on the bridge, which has caused some quite serious damage to the actual stone work and foundation of the parapet that isn't visible as you drive across. I have attached a picture below to give you some idea of the issue.
National Highways are having to employ specialist stonemasons to complete the repair as the bridge is not only an essential part of the Woodhead route but also an important heritage asset, so it needs to be done properly and there are lots of heritage regulations that have to be followed. It's akin to restoring a listed building but with the added complications of the weather and traffic so I'm sure you can appreciate how complex it is.
At present, I cannot give any timescales for when the lights will be removed, however I am assured by National Highways that they are working on a solution that will allow 2 way traffic while the repairs are done. As soon as I hear more about this I'll post another update.

It's like all those huge infrastructure projects held up for weeks or months a few newts, and much else in this crazy modern world, it's disproportionate cobblers.

I'm sorry but if a faster repair might not be up to the top standards of heritage regulations I don't really care when literally thousands of people are being inconvenienced every day.

Madness.

I went over there last week and for the first time it looked like some actual work was being done on it and a scaffold has been put up.
