Sheffield 15 Min Zone

If we want clean air, why were no plans made 20 or 30 years ago to keep tightening up on vehicle emissions periodically and working slowly towards clean air.

Of course there have been plans, why do you think over the last 20 years, the required emissions standards for new motor vehicles have gone from Euro 3 to Euro 6?

What has actually happened is that environmental activists have taken the government to court and won, because there are still dangerous levels of pollution in some places. That’s why you are seeing clean air zones being introduced, because the government will have huge fines imposed if they aren’t seen to act.

Will this prove to you that something is afoot.

Please note particularly paragraphs  d)   f)  and   o)

What this proves is that politicians like to try to score points off each other.

This is what regularly happens at Council meetings.

The opposition want something to be discussed. Usually they want it to appear that the party in power aren’t doing enough, and they have a great idea to make things better.

They put a motion to the Council meeting ( which they have to submit in writing some time before the meeting.)

The party in power will ask its officers questions about the subjects covered in the motion and find out what the council has done and is planning to do on that front.

The ruling party will then submit amendments to the motion, which will basically say:

We note what you’ve proposed and it’s a fine thing!

We’ve already got it covered in our policies and plans.

We are already doing plenty and don’t need to do anything else.

Here’s what we’ve already done on it and how much we’ve spent.

Here’s what we are planning to do and what we’ll spend on it.

Aren’t we great!

It’s the politics of the Council chamber playing out. Essentially a bit of banter between political rivals.

Have a read of this article from the Oxford Gazette.

Extracts:

Six traffic filters (also sometimes referred to as bus gates) will be trialled in Oxford, with the aim of reducing traffic, making bus journeys faster and making walking and cycling safer.

The traffic filters are not physical barriers of any kind and will not be physical road closures. They are simply traffic cameras that can read number plates.

Oxford residents (and residents of some surrounding villages) will be able to apply for a permit to drive through the filters on up to 100 days a year. Residents living in the rest of Oxfordshire will be able to apply for a permit to drive through the filter up to 25 days a year.

I love how they've sweetened this bit, simply traffic cameras that will record your movements and in time charge you accordingly, the softener they're giving you now is only the start and they've clearly already got the gullible on board. How do you think they are going to achieve net zero if this is giving you the freedom you think it is.

I'm not even going to bother arguing with dimwits who agree with this, for the rest of you with any care for what happens to the your children and grandchildren MAKE SURE BY WHATEVER MEANS YOU CAN TO MAKE SURE THIS RESTRICTIVE NONSENSE FAILS.

Lol - and how long have ANPR cameras been around.

BTW easy to avoid the half dozen bus gates eg  by using the ring road.

"residents will still be able to drive to every part of the city at any time – but in the future, during certain times of the day, you may need to take a different route (e.g. using the ring road) if you want to travel by car."

You've fallen into the trap, I'm not even bothering arguing.

Normal people - DO NOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN.

Yes you are, as per usual.

How  long have ANPR cameras been around, or people using ring roads to get around cities?

Imagine being against life saving medicine, and clean air, and making cities better, and taking sensible precautions to protect the vulnerable.

You would have to be a very special knobhead to be like that.
