Yes I understand that but driving less than a minute down the road for a pint of milk.

In Sheffield that could be getting on for half a mile up quite a steep hill.

It might be a 5 minute car journey, but an hour walk there and back.
alchresearch
Great news about the 62 mph speed limit - it means we'll finally be able to FASTER on the M1 at Meadowhall - that's been constantly 50 due to "air pollution" for ages! Thought it was 60? In any case you can go as fast as you want, only a couple of the gantries have cameras on them and they are very obvious as they are bright yellow at the side of the road. Just slow down at those ones. Nudge nudge wink wink.

They even fluoresce in the dark.

Yep, you're right, it is 60 https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/transport/drivers-warned-over-indefinite-new-60mph-speed-limit-on-m1-near-meadowhall-3256392
HeHasRisen
In any case, there is no way that 62 would ever be a limit as it too difficult to administer from the point of view of looking at a car speedo, 60 is a nice even number that is marked on the dial (if not by a number, by a line)
Findlay
The recommendation is a lowering of 6.2mph not 62mph speed limit in large cities to lower demand. Where you have congestion I wouldn't have a problem with 50mph if I'm heading into standing traffic a few miles ahead. Speeding is the second biggest factor after the cummuative amount of vehicles in creating congestion. Keep to the speed limit and don't close the gaps. As for banning cars on Sundays in cities, why not give it a go yourself insead of having it enforced? Edited January 14, 2023 by Findlay
