Except they didn't : Oliver Coppard stood for Labour, in Hallam, in a General Election, just after everyone fell out of love with Nick Clegg, and lost.

 

it was Clear that Labour couldn't win Hallam - they had a great candidate, everyone hated the incumbent, they still lost.

 

Another General Election came round, and Sheffield Labour needed a disposable candidate - why burn out a good candidate on an unwinnable seat?

 

Jared got picked - he was never meant to win, there was no way he could.

 

And then he did.

 

(We could of course say similarly witty things about Blue rosettes, Tories and North Yorkshire/Shropshire/etc)

It was quite clear that the Labour vote in Hallam had been increasing in the years up to 2017 and was a question of when not if they'd take it. If indeed they put this clown forward as their candidate because they thought they had no chance of winning then it would seem they were somewhat ignorant to this.
