carosio
I think one reason they stopped issuing the discs was because of counterfeit, although the later ones included a pattern which would not reproduce properly when scanned.
Guest sibon
It’s not a hill I’d choose to die on, but I do think that a certificate in a car is a good idea. Not, the old tax disc, but one that shows that the car is insured and tested. I agree with @fools, by the way, it is high time that road tax was binned. There are a few reasons why I’d like the certificate to be displayed. It would make it easier for everyone to spot uninsured/untested cars. That might bring a bit of peer pressure to ensure that cars were tested. It also makes it easier for the police. Just as importantly, they would act as a reminder to the owner that the mot was due. All those cameras about the place, ever more than before, yet they think they are fine as there is no visual confirmation on the dash anymore. I have seen television programs showing the police using the ANPR cameras to stop and impound vehicles where quite a few officers are used. However I have never seen any television programs showing police going to the homes of drivers using vehicles not insured and tax because of the use of ANPR cameras. Probably because it would make dull television, and that sort of thing is something the overstretched police generally now dont do.

Also next door neighbours and work colleagues noticed if a car was not displaying a valid tax disc. With the abolishment of tax discs it is easier for drivers to go un noticed if they are not taxed or insured. A paper based system with a displayed tax disc and a data base would be a belt and braces approach. Whenever I take my car in for anything they simply zap the number plate and their system than tells them more I know about my car.
