The Chinese seem a bit deflated for taking a rise out of the Americans.

Axe
The US authorities would surely capture the balloon for investigation purposes if they have the technology and know how to do so.

Why not just use the thing as target practice & pick the remains up? If these are surveillance balloons, shoot them down as soon as they enter your airspace & they survey no more. However more would be learned from capturing the balloon intact which could be the reason why it has not already been shot down.
