Many Schools 'Routinely Disregard' Safeguarding Principles On Gender Identity

I’m not exactly clear what the point is of your clumsy coalescence of two very different issues.

However, you’ll be pleased to hear that school staff in the UK are well trained to safeguard the kids in their care. That includes spotting and acting upon instances of self harm.

It really isn’t just a matter for medical professionals. Dealing with self harm includes multiple agencies, including teachers and other school staff.

Yep!

Who needs parents?

Problem is the mental health crisis in schools is getting worse, not better!

Is this national non-sequitur day?

You post would suggest that we need more teachers.

Anyone know why mental health is rising amongst children?

Depends who you ask

If you ask Chekhov its Covid Lockdowns.

If you ask Abs its Sats being too hard.

If you ask transphobes its not knowing what gender they are.

Mental ill health of children rising?

There's a question....

Through the reading I've done on the area  (which isn't thorough, and bear in mind, I'm not a doctor), and the area in which I work adult social care which is related, I've learned the following:

Many more people in the public eye are prepared to be more open about mental ill health, this has helped others, particularly males to be more open than they used to be about their particular struggles. This is positive, and some young people will be questioning "what is normal" in the context of mental health. That's not an indication of rising mental ill health, but just people wondering what's going on for them.

As far as I'm aware the rates of psychotic illnesses (e.g. schizophrenia and Manic Depression) in the adult population is fairly stable, and similarly rates of these illnesses in young people are also stable.

I think that for many years mental health services, especially for children, have been 'cinderella' services, consequently they cannot deal with the rise in demand now that it's happened. Coupled with this, austerity since 2010 meant that many 'ancillary' services to young people's mental health were cut (education services, youth services, voluntary sector, grants to local government). So while Ministers might say that we've protected NHS spending, what they don't tell you is that those services which help prevention and also help with the triaging and supporting of young people with mental health needs in the community have been cut.

It seems fairly common sense to me that if so many young people are living their lives online, and not outside in the fresh air, socialising with others, and exercising, this will probably have an impact on their mental health. I'd say diet probably also has an impact on someone's mental health though that will possibly be at the margins in all but the most extreme cases.

What angers and depresses me is that these stories are blown up by the press and MPs like Miriam Cates jump on the band wagon, and she is now seen as 'the darling of the Tory right'.

Miriam Cates: the new Tory ‘darling’ and rising star of the right | Conservatives | The Guardian

Apparently she's an evangelical Christian, but also a very selective one.

So she'll use her religion as a stick to beat a minority with, but let her start with her pursed lips disapproval of the majority, and see how far her religion gets her.

The people who can't see through people like this are as much to blame as she is, IMO.

Lol

What qualifies "teachers" to advise children on medical, mental health and surgical issues?

Especially when they are more prone to mental health issues than the average child!

You need to give this up. Your lack of understanding is a bit embarrassing.

In terms of the self harm which you were so concerned about a few posts ago, teachers are in a perfect position to spot the signs when pupils engage in it. Equally, they are in a good place to spot the signs of abuse from others.

Then they are the perfect people to help to engage other agencies as appropriate.

You need to sort that teacher hate of yours out. Maybe stick to posting pornography.
