Annie Bynnol
UK Passports to Schengen(EU*+ Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) countries(and others) have now to be stamped and date of issue checked. Your airline/ferry/tunnel/border control will check the date of issue and if it is more than 10 years ago on return you can be refused travel. On a UK passport in Schengen you cannot use the 'automatic' eye scanner so be prepared for longer queues. The reason they stamp is to stop you staying for more than *90 days in total in any 180 period. *Not Ireland. Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania have different rules.
