Castle House Co-Op Closing Down

It's an area that has great potential if only they could properly sort it out.

but it's had great potential for decades, and still hasn't drug itself out of the gutter.

I can see Wilko's and B&M moving down to The Moor

Once that happens it's all over

That area will be swallowed up by the drugs and gang violence from the Wicker (little Somalia)

There is a new Lidl round the corner which is infinitly cheaper.

No loss (other than the jobs)

I tried the Lidl, it's horrid, too busy, too crowded, never anything I want left on the shelves, 'own brand' stuff I have tried was horrid....

I don't really go to the co-op that often, but still prefer it to Lidl.....

but there are other options in the city, and in that area (Small Sainsburys, and Tesco a bit further up) Heron and B&M just round the corner, so it's not like Co-Op is filling a gap atm...

Yeah I walked in and grabbed a basket

The queue was longer than the store.

Full of students

I walked out, went home and ordered online delivery with ASDA

No I would expect it to be cheaper

Well it isn’t, you’re probably a bit like me, get 90% of what I want during my big supermarket shop, the remainder comes locally and more expensively, such is life.

The only time I have been in there so far there was barely anyone in, shall take your word on that. To be frank everytime I have been in the Co-Op round the corner I have had to queue too, if its not behind a few old dears at the main checkouts, its behind a few old dears at the ciggie kiosk paying their bills. All much of a muchness.

Can't say I am totally surprised that store is closing. It really did seem like the last dregs of a long dead store.  It was already looking dated when I worked down that end of town  years ago, it certainly won't  have improved much since.  It was old and out of style of the modern day Co-ops which have entirely different floorplates and image.

Their supermarket size branch on Pinstone Street closed ages ago as have bigger supermarkets across most of the other co-op societies (with I think exception of Scotland and a couple of anomalies down south  they have moved completely away from trolley shopping)

Since the glory days of 'the divy' that store has faced increasing new competition from at least 5 different Tesco stores, 3 different Sainsbury's stores, a revamped M&S food on Fargate, several specialist independent grocery shops, several food courts offering a variety of cuisine to grab and go and of course their own much more modern and purpose built convenience stores on Broad Lane and Glossop Road.

It's a nice chunk of valuable floor space in an already multi-use building so there's little need for them to be clinging on.

I do find it interesting that in all mourning and wailing comments in the Sheffield Star, there's hardly a  mention of the supermarket bit - they are just upset and reminiscing about the department store which has already been closed for 15 years 🙄
