I Haven't Changed My Politics, It's Society And Politics That Has Changed

A friend of mine who has always been a Tory commented the other day that the present Tory party is more left wing than Blair's Labour party used to be.

I think he's right and explains my shift. This is a typical example :

Acute shortage of rented properties because the balance of power is too far away from the landlord and more and more regulation means it's too much hassle being a  landlord, so what do they do, make it even worse :

Many commented that the Tories had to adopt some policies that were more akin to Socialism during the pandemic.

But have no fear ,they will return to their true colours if you like that sort of thing.

The far right is still much in evidence and awaiting an opportunity to air their views.

I think you will find most are not.

I am not surprised mental health is rising at an alarming rate, especially amongst the younger generation. The poor souls only used to have to worry about whether to take French or German at school, now they are getting brainwashed into wondering whether they are a boy or a girl.

Desperate times.

As I mentioned on another thread (albeit about children) - are 'Mental Health' issues rising at an alarming rate, or is it simply that some people just need to build some mental strength and resilience? That way, those with actual mental health issues will be able to access the help they need because the service isn't saturated with non-cases.

I feel that the title of the thread is interesting because, yes, some of your views may change over time and you will move one way on the political spectrum but, in some cases, your views may not change and it's the political spectrum that actually moves and, to the world, you become the opposite of what you were 20 years ago.

Some of the most staunch Labour voters in my family hold some of the most (arguably) right wing views on foreigners and gay people. They would argue they were left, but their views over time have moved them further and further to the right.

Rose tinted grumpy old man BS has been with us since the dawn of history, and by the looks of it is set to continue.

I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise [disrespectful] and impatient of restraint.

(Hesiod, 8th century BC)

What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them? (Plato ~380BC)

The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress. (Peter the Hermit, 1274AD)

“Our sires’ age was worse than our grandsires’. We, their sons, are more worthless than they; so in our turn we shall give the world a progeny yet more corrupt.”
Horace (Odes 20BC)

Modern fashions seem to keep on growing more and more debased … The ordinary spoken language has also steadily coarsened. People used to say ‘raise the carriage shafts’ or ‘trim the lamp wick,’ but people today say ‘raise it’ or ‘trim it.’
Kenko - Japan 1330

Whither are the manly vigour and athletic appearance of our forefathers flown? Can these be their legitimate heirs? Surely, no; a race of effeminate, self-admiring, emaciated fribbles can never have descended in a direct line from the heroes of Potiers and Agincourt…
Al Bundy - Letter in Town and Country magazine 1771

A fearful multitude of untutored savages, boys with dogs at their heels and other evidence of dissolute habits, girls who drive coal-carts, ride astride upon horses, drink, swear, fight, smoke, whistle, and care for nobody…the morals of children are tenfold worse than formerly.
hackey lad the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, 1843

We defy anyone who goes about with his eyes open to deny that there is, as never before, an attitude on the part of young folk which is best described as grossly thoughtless, rude, and utterly selfish.
Chekhov (Hull Daily Mail 1925)

Would that classify as being triggered?
