I agree with both Organgrinder and (surprisingly) fools.

But what are we going to do about it?

Can it be prevented? And considering it is a world wide phonomenom and we live in a global society, can it be prevented everywhere?

Who are the masters? Is it all negatives?

Surely there must be an upside too.

Labour saving devices?  :)

Did you build your house, your furniture, appliances, grow that food from all over the world, in your fridge and on your shelves?

I was extending my reply when you posted this. Yes I believe there is a very definite positive aspect very possible to this, but it depends on people doing the right thing.... And sharing the benefits rather than keeping them for personal gain.

Think Tim Berners Lee,  rather than Bill Gates.  After all Bill Gates is rich enough already.

There could be a positive aspect as modern labour saving devices have proved,  but sooner or later,  money becomes the main aspect and then Governments realising how they could utilize the latest technology.

That's usually followed by the criminal world who never miss a trick with anything new.  The days of the old fashioned criminals who couldn't spell their own names are long since gone.

In the end we are always the losers again.

Trastrick is  off course a bit though,  your washing machine and toaster are never going to ruin your life and we can never go back to each man building his own dwelling.

We need to ensure our governments don't get too authorative or nationalistic and that's the way many are heading these days whilst their supporters, strangely enough.  blame the left rather than the right.

A quick read through our right wing friend's ( or not ) posts, are already proving that.

Anytime you want you can do the right thing and bring all the world's goods to my door, without the expectation of "personal gain" please feel free to do so. :)

Or direct me to someone else who will!

As for the motivations that keeps the world economy going, it takes all kinds of people.the inventors, the developers, the manufacturers, the shippers and distributors, and the local retail outlets in places like Meadowhall, and Tesco.

Specialists in their respective fields. You could never have owned a PC hand made for you by Mr. Tim Berners, great visionary that he was. Or fat juicy strawberries and cream in December, for that matter :)

I alluded to it in a recent post:

"Sometimes people are attracted to ideas that become profitable due to their intrinsic value, not because of a burning desire to accumulate wealth for it's own sake.

"There are more things important to some people than money, but it's a hard concept for followers of the politics of greed and envy to get their heads around;

"They tend to judge others by their own appetites in life.

Good points.

We pride ourselves on being a free society in a law abiding Democracy.

But how free are we going to feel if we are constantly being watched, photographed and followed round by drones picking up and fining you for every misdemeanour?

Think it won't happen?

Think again...

you are being constantly watched and followed already

this isn't a matter of stifling technical innovation for the sake of it, it's about the dangers of letting machines think for themselves, and the dangers of manipulation and fakery. The dangers of using machine learning to find ways to do bad things

If you can no longer believe what you are seeing and hearing, that will also have massive implications.

It seems the Scientists have just woken up to the fact that AI is a mixed blessing and we have to tread carefully.

I agree.  I've been watching quite a few documentaries about it, and it truly is amazing stuff but with inherent life changing consequencies . And it is proceeding at a break neck speed, so we have to use caution. However handled right, it could be the answer to a lot of our problems.

But the people we have to convince most are those that are using it at the moment, eg, the big super Corporations etc. They are proceeding with it to maximise profits with no precautions in place, and no interest in the unintended consequences. We have very little control over them so need them to engage in a long term futures debate to see where it will lead.

But in a society where greed prevails and money is all that matters, will they?

What do you think?

My computer teacher says it's a good thing if it's used carefully but humans are greedy and selfish so it will probably end up being a bad thing.

does anyone like talking to automated phone systems, and want autonomous drones following them around looking to see if they drop litter. public are asleep as to the possible consequences. people abroad are getting stopped from going to a concert because of where they work, this stuff is happening now.

No apart the litter drones, if they really worked and that’s all they were looking for.  There are some dirty, litterbug trampy scrubbers around dumping their junk food and drink trash out of car windows.  They know damn well know they shouldn’t do it because funnily enough the places I find it  (and often clear up) are usually carefully selected to not be overlooked by any houses.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up.

That's it in a nutshell.

But the bad thing doesn't bear thinking about. It's going to be very bad for all of us which is why it needs a deep think right now and some serious legislation to maintain our rights and freedoms, or we're going to become either a slave or a disposable inconvenience.

IMO this has more implications and is more important to our future on the planet than climate change.
