Parents in Huw Edwards case ‘offered tens of thousands for TalkTV interview’: Interview with couple understood to have been recorded for broadcast on sister TV station of the Sun

Quote

Rupert Murdoch’s News UK has offered tens of thousands of pounds to the parents who made allegations about Huw Edwards, in return for a television interview, according to sources at the media company.

The Guardian understands that an interview with the couple has been recorded and is being edited for broadcast on TalkTV, the sister station of the Sun. Sources said the parents have been offered a significant sum for this.

... An editorial in Monday’s print edition of the Sun emphasised that the issue was not about money for the family: “They did not seek any payment. They just wanted the payments harming their child to stop.”

What an odd turn of phrase - "they wanted the payments harming their child to stop".

Parent said son was using the payments to fund his drugs.

Yes I forgot about that.

He was/ is  addicted to crack cocaine.

A pity his parents or Edwards couldn't have persuaded him to use the money to go into a rehab clinic.

That would have made more sense all round and perhaps prevented the whole situation from dominating the national news as it did.

I'm not so sure.

First of all, Murdoch wants to damage the BBC as much as possible, and have them as supplicant. Secondly, even if the young man concerned wasn't an addict, I just have a sense that the parents would've gone to the Sun anyway.

But once out it was bound to dominate the national news.

And as an article I linked earlier made clear, the BBC don't want to be seen as covering up for Edwards, which is why, they above other broadcasters really have gone to town with this.

In some ways that's to their credit, because if a journalist from the Sun had done something to cause the so called 'moral majority' to start clutching their pearls, would the Sun be so candid? Not on your life it wouldn't.

In fact, they above any newspaper, made sure that the recommendations from the Leveson Inquiry weren't implemented.
