The_DADDY
The bill will reportedly apply to suspects in crimes that are punishable by a minimum of five years in jail. Amidst ongoing protests in France, the country has just passed a new bill that will allow police to remotely access suspects’ cameras, microphones, and GPS on cell phones and other devices. The bill has been criticized by the French people as a “snoopers” charter that allows police unfettered access to the location of its citizens. Moreover, police can activate cameras and microphones to take video and audio recordings of suspects. The bill will reportedly only apply to suspects in crimes that are punishable by a minimum of five years in jail and Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti claimed that the new provision would only affect a few dozen cases per year. During a debate over the bill yesterday, French politicians added an amendment that orders judge approval for any surveillance conducted under the scope of the bill and limits the duration of surveillance to six months, according to Le Monde. https://gizmodo.com/france-bill-allows-police-access-phones-camera-gps-1850609772 So, is this a good idea? A way to keep French citizens safe or could it be the start of something more sinister? Your thoughts?

Al Bundy
Anything that makes life safer for us law abiding citizens gets a thumbs up from me. Why would anyone be against surveillance if they are doing nothing wrong,?
RollingJ
OK - my thoughts - this is France, not the UK, so doesn't affect me, and in any case our police and security services already have similar provisions. Ignoring the typical hysteria, no-one appears to have thought of the costs and logistics involved - it is only going to be used in extreme cases. The type of criminals likely to be targetted in this manner will also be sensible/clued up enough to use 'virgin'/throwaway phones. There is more, but I've got better things to do on a Sunday morning than to worry about paranoid persons. Edited July 16, 2023 by RollingJ
geared
I assume this bill would require all phones sold in France to have a backdoor for the police to use, I very much doubt Apple will comply with that.
