Padders
I started a thread a few years ago about getting rid of this awful stuff lining our pockets, due to the rising cost of living I thought I'd mention it again. I am, of course referring to 1ps and 2ps. They're absolutely worthless, and annoying. I've become rather adept at finding discarded ones, especially in amusements arcades and around school playgrounds, I could easily find enough to pay for the price of a pint. Not anymore! I need to be searching for 5ps and 10ps to make it worthwhile. Isn't it time to get rid of the dam things. Charity boxes would also benefit, as people would pop in their 5/10ps instead of 1/2ps. We got rid of farthings and halfpennys a long time ago, so is now the time to get rid of this shrapnel?
Pyrotequila
Isn't there some kind of subconscious psychological thing where it come across as more acceptable to people to pay £1.99 or £4.99 for something rather than £2 or £5?

We got rid of farthings and halfpennys a long time ago, so is now the time to get rid of this shrapnel? Hmmm... Wouldn't that mean that inflation would rise dramatically? Price increases on individual items in supermarkets would no longer be by the odd penny, but in increments of 5p's. So maybe we'd also have to introduce a "rounding up" system when you come to pay... ... a bit like they do when you pay for fuel in petrol stations? For example, if I buy a single banana with a shelf price of 18p... ... would this cost me 15p or 20p at the checkout? I think we know the answer to that one! But it's not like you can chop a bit of banana off or add a bit more to get your money's worth... ... so in that respect, it wouldn't work the same way as when buying fuel. So obviously, the banana would have to be priced at 20p. Or maybe this would actually INCREASE sales of bananas? Buying 1 banana would mean you'd be overcharged by 2p (price 18p, charged 20p) 2 bananas you'd be overcharged by 4p (price 36p, charged 40p) 3 bananas (price 54p, charged 55p) 4 bananas (price 72p, charged 75p) 5 bananas (price 90p, charged 90p) So to get the "shelf" price, people would have to buy 5 bananas when they only wanted 1! Not as such, as an example the Czech Republic uses the koruna and the lowest multiple coin is the 1 koruna but shops still display prices in two decimal point increments. Debit/credit card payments the exact amount is taken, cash payment they use the overall total and then round up. So a banana for 0.6 koruna and an apple for 0.3 koruna would cost you 1 koruna in total, and not 2. @Padders its a sensible suggestion to be honest.
