Songs That Are Darker Than You Remember

Being a child of the 80s, I remember singing along to Nik Kershaw's Wouldn't It Be Good:

Hadn't given it much thought until I came across the video again and gave it a listen.  Blimey those lyrics are dark:

It's getting harder
Just keeping life and soul together
I'm sick of fighting
Even though I know I should
The cold is biting
Through each and every nerve and fibre
My broken spirit is frozen to the core
I don't want to be here no more

Any other songs from way back when that you thought were merry tunes but subsequently revealed themselves to be yawning chasms of gloom?

I'm not sure it's dark in the content of the wording, but the Sweet Dreams cover by Marilyn Manson is certainly turned 'Dark' IMO.

My daughter walks out if I play it. I think it's odd, but good. Saying that, he's bloody odd!

In a totally different music style. A lot of the Carpenters songs were about darker things. She was a very talented but troubled lady.

Delilah by Tom Jones, singing about his cheating partner.  The song has been banned from Welsh rugby matches.

My, my, my, Delilah
Why, why, why, Delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me Delilah, I just couldn't take anymore

She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more.

The Green Green Grass Of Home  .....   Tom Jones.

When I was young I only really listened to the tune not the words.

Yes, exactly.  I remember that one too from when I was quite small.  Walking with the guard and the sad old padre at daybreak.  Oh.

There's nothing about that song that's not disturbing.
