What Happened To All The Shoe Shops ?

Recommended Posts

From my youth, I recall the chains Dolcis, Ravel, Saxone, Russell & Bromley, and Freeman, Hardy & Willis. Moving to Sheffield 25 years ago, I just remember Charles Clinkard, which I think was in Chapel Walk at the time, and a Clarks shop on Pinstone Street. I could be mistaken on the locations though. The (then) Coles Brothers annexe in Cambridge Street had a large section for children's shoes.

Today, Charles Clinkard has moved to Meadowhall I believe, as has Schuh (which used to be in Orchard Square). We still had a dedicated Dr. Martens shop in Chapel Walk the last time I walked down there.

Yes, trainers shops down the Moor. I can only wear those now as they are so comfortable, but still have to try them on and walk around the shop in them first. Nothing worse than sending for shoes online ,then having to send them back because they don’t fit.

I did notice a few years ago that shoes nearly disappeared and everywhere referred to everything as "Footwear",  because it was all trainers.  Glad to see now they are making a comeback.

Yes, and usually at your own expense.

Most of them were just trading names for the British Shoe Corporation.
