Glossop Road Turkish Baths

Me and a few mates got into a routine on a Friday afternoon/ evening of playing ,5 a side,spending a couple of hours at Glossop Road,and then off out on the town.

That would be in the late 60s and early 70s.

We were by far the youngest there but the place had its regular characters including one who always had bargains to sell.

The steam baths followed by the cold plunge pool certainly relaxed and then enlivened you. I never subjected myself to the care of the resident masseur.

That didn’t look at all relaxing.

The showers always had blocks of rock hard carbolic soap.....no fragrant shower gels then.

What I always remember is how good the first couple of pints tasted and how quickly they went down

My self and a pal ,   Jack Wasden usually visited the sauna  in those days . A Good laugh and chin wag followed by a pint or two in the Red Lion on Holly Street .

Was there a swimming pool there too?

We must have been an unattractive lot then.....never an approach!

Not many from the other sex down West St. either most weeks.
