This is what happens when a) national governments cut funding to local authorities, and b) local authorities arent legally allowed to raise council tax by the current rate of inflation without having a referendum first.

I look forward to this thread going off on one about rainbow pedestrian crossing and big flower pots soon though. Stay tuned.

Nothing a bit of highly leverage speculation on commercial property by inexperienced politicians can't fix.

Surely they can fine for parking anywhere that is not on the road or in a designated space?? They have a duty to protect access for wheelchair users/people with cerebal palsy.

If they can find the power to fine hard-working van drivers going about their work in the city centre, surely they can find it to fine obstructive, selfish car drivers.

Which bit of this don’t you understand?

Parking on the footway or verge, in itself is not an “offence/contravention” in areas outside London.

The government have put in place regulations that allow London councils to enforce against parking on footways, but they have not introduced it in the rest of England ( despite Councils asking them to repeatedly).

The council could only enforce on it if there was a restriction in place that applied to the footway too, such as a double or single yellow line. In such circumstances they can and do issue tickets.

The police are the only ones who can enforce obstruction and and, on the rare occasions they do enforce it, they generally apply the double buggy test, so if someone pushing  a double buggy can get past a vehicle without going into the road, it isn’t obstruction.

So do you think they only fine “hard working” people? Do you think they let the lazier ones off?

Have SCC done that? Some of the Tory Councils (Thurrock) have.

Central Government have long pushed for Council's to sell off capital assets (houses and other buildings for example), however, once this asset has gone, it's gone.

Not sure if you’re serious, but a drop in the bucket compared to the real drain.

Tongue firmly in cheek with my comment.

They need to get fining those parking on the pavement and on bicycle lanes. That will bring in some revenue.

The amount raised from bus lane fines last year was a drop in the ocean: https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/politics/council/sheffield-bus-lanes-city-council-raked-ps2m-bus-lane-fines-last-year-ps5000-day-4224461

How long does it take to get over what the previous government did ?   they've had 13 years already.

Not 13 years of putting things right but 13 years of making them worse.   Everything in the country is worse than they were when the Tories took office.

This lot have borrowed more, taxed us more, cost us more than 4 billion dur to Brexit and got us involved in the costs of another war in Ukraine.

They've ruined the NHS,  schools and hospitals are falling apart due to lack of maintenance and the country is full of asylum seekers whilst Sunak keeps making pledges which he never keeps.

Indeed.

But you have to admit, making umpteen cuts to funding, passing the cuts on to local councils, then blaming the councils for the failing services, is a very neat bit of Tory buck passing don't you think?

Got to hand it to the Tories, when it comes to devious manipulation they are the Masters...

Quite correct Anna,  and I find it surprising that there are still people willing to vote for such a devious set of individuals.

The game they are playing is quite easy to understand and yet,  Tory voters don't seem to mind at all.

Blaming cuts on the last Labour government wore very thin a long time ago and it screams of desperation to actually keep using this excuse after 13 long years of Tory government.  No wonder this country is in such a mess.
