The new Manchester Airport Eastern Link Road makes it much easier to get onto the M56 to head towards Chester/Wrexham/N Wales without having to suffer the Woodhead or the Snake, usually head through Castleton and go up Winnats and head to near Whaley Bridge and past Disley and join with the relief road just before Hazel Grove.

Obviously a good alternative route for the airport too. If Winnats is shut just head past Sparrowpit down to Calver.

We live in Rotherham so Woodhead is our usual route to get to the link road, otherwise it's up to the M62 and across or down towards Birmingham and across.

Aberystwyth is lovely. So are the surrounding places Aberdovey is beautiful, Machynlleth has great history.  Devils Bridge is interesting, if a bit touristy.

In my experience, it takes about 4.5 hours from Sheffield, whichever way you go. Just relax and enjoy the drive.
