Bus Lane Fine On Arundel Gate

Most likely an attempt to reduce pollution on Arundel Gate since they forced more buses to use it because of the wrongful closure of Pinstone St.

But people have to go miles out of their way just to turn into it.

God knows how much extra pollution that causes...

My guess : To stop private cars clogging up the bus lane.

even i knew that you could avoid the queues on the ring road by using Arundel gate as a short cut  down to Park Square (and vice-versa)

Exactly this. Forcing private cars onto ring roads is hardly anything new.

Agreed. That needs to be re-opened. Having buses turn back on themselves on division street is counter-productive and  has caused problems with the Friday/Saturday night drinkers over safety concerns. So much so that buses take a different route during these periods.

Like all these scams, it’s about raising money not lowering pollution.

Utter rubbish.

Restrictions like this cannot be lawfully put in place to raise income.

Sheffield, like many other cities, is removing through traffic from the city centre.

Most other large cities are doing exactly the same. Leeds have been gradually introducing it for a while now and Bradford are now starting on a scheme to do the same.

Nobody has asked the most obvious question, which is, - why on earth did they change it?

The change serves no useful purpose.

Is it just to inconvenience the driver and slow down the traffic?

It’s part of a wider scheme, Connecting Sheffield - City Centre. From this article:

The Arundel Gate bus gate forms part of proposals consulted on previously as part of the Connecting Sheffield – City Centre scheme. The scheme would improve the look and feel of Arundel Gate by introducing new cycling and bus routes around the city centre, including along Arundel Gate, in addition to improved footpaths, and green space.

The Connecting Sheffield – City Centre plans for Arundel Gate would see a new segregated cycleway created on the northbound side of the road to ultimately connect into new cycle routes around Castlegate to Darnall and West Bar/Kelham, along with new pathways and environmental improvements to make Arundel Gate much greener and more attractive. The bus gate contributes by reducing through traffic heading northbound on Arundel Gate to create space, and a better environment, for cycling and walking.
