Because we also need charging infrastructure. And a tax regime that takes electric cars into account. And a way of dealing with all the scrapped vehicles. And an understanding that we aren’t the only country in the world.

Let a business do as it wants . If it is successful good , if not , not so good .

That’s fine until it is a bank, or an insurance company that fails, or there’s a pandemic.

The problem Is that petrol/diesel cars are dreadful for the environment. In much the same way that we are phasing out smoking, we need to phase out fossil fuel cars.

 

That requires the government and the car manufacturers to work together to do the right thing.


In the UK, it seems that the car manufacturers are willing, but the government are too focussed on scrambling a few votes from pensioners to look at things rationally.
